Chapter 9 Catabolic Pathways and Production of ATP Fermentation- partial degradation of sugars or other organic fuel that occurs with out the use of oxygen Aerobic respiration- oxygen is consumed as reactant along with organic fuel Organic compounds +oxygen-> carbon dioxide+water+energy Anaerobic respiration – without oxygen Cellular respiration- includes both aerobic and anaerobic processes Most common fuel is glucose, breakdown is exergonic (spontaneous) Redox reactions: Oxidation and Reduction The relocation of electrons releases energy stored in organic molecules and this energy is used to synthesize atp Electron transfers are called oxidation-reduction reactions or Redox reactions Oxidation loss of electrons from one substance Reduction addition of electrons to another substance Reducing agent is the electron donor Oxidating agent is the electron acceptor Respiration is the oxidation of glucose and other molecules in food Enzymes in the cells lower the activation energy of the sugar so It can be oxidized 1. Electrons are stripped from glucose 2. Each electron travels with a hydrogen atom 3. Dehydrogenases remove a pair of hydrogen atoms from glucose 4. Delivers 2 electrons and 1 proton to NAD+ 5. Passed to electron carrier (NAD+), also functions as an oxidizing agent 6. NAD+ has its charge neutralized when it is reduced to NADH 7. Travels down transport chain to oxygen Oxygen pulls electrons down the chain ( the electrons from NAD+ fall down the gradient in the
