Chapter 17 Gene Expression is the process by which DNA directs the synthesis of proteins TWO STAGES o Transcription o Translation Transcription is the synthesis of RNA using information in the DNA Serves as template for assembling a complementary sequence of RNA Nucleotides Eukaryote: -Takes place in nucleus Bacteria: -Does not have membrane, they take place at the same time Messenger RNA – carries a genetic message from the DNA to the protein synthesizing machinery of the cell Translation is the synthesis of a polypeptide suing information in the mRNA, cell must translate the nucleotide sequence of an mRNA molecule into the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide Eukaryote: -Takes place in the cytoplasm Sites of translation are ribosomes, complex particles that facilitate the orderly linking of amino acids into polypeptide chains DNA->RNA->Protein is the central dogma Bacterial Cell: Transcription DNA->mRNA-> Translation Ribosome->polypeptide Eukaryotic cell: Transcription DNA->pre-mrna->rna processing->mrna->ribosome->polypeptide Duri9ng transcription the gene determines the sequence of nucleotide bases along the length of the RNA molecule Template strand- the strand being transcribed Mrna is read in 5->3 directions Dna Transcription Mrna
