Jurisdiction Two types of Jurisdiction: 1.  Subject matter 2.  Personal Personal Jurisdiction: refers to the court's power over the  parties to a lawsuit and is usually an issue when the  defendant in a lawsuit is a resident of a different state  than the one in which the lawsuit was filed.   Personal jurisdiction over the plaintiff is typically not an  issue because the plaintiff has chosen that particular  court and therefore consented to jurisdiction by filing  his/her lawsuit there.
