A Brief Background of Photovoltaic Cells Energy has been one of the most debated topics in the 21st century, due to the increase in consumption; it's limited sources and mainly the impact in the environment. Sustainability became a hot item worldwide. Traditional energy sources such as oil and coal have limited reserves and the increasing consumption is direct impacting the atmosphere in an effect well known as global warming. Therefore alternative and cleaner sources of energy are required in order to sustain growth, and a great alternative source would be a photovoltaic cell. Photovoltaic cells turn light into electricity, one of the most common sources of light is the sunlight, so then photoelectric cells become known as solar cells. Photovoltaic cells have many advantages such as easy installation, pollution and noise free and the ability to match the demand during peak times. Photoelectric effect is what transforms light into electricity. It was discovered by physicist Edmund Bequerel and later developed by Albert Einsten who won a Nobel Prize for relating the nature of light to technology and then further explaining the photovoltaic effect. The term photovoltaic comes from the Greek word photo, which means light and voltaic comes from the Italian physicist Volta who discovered the unit of Volt. Although Bequerel discovered the photoelectric effect in 1839, the first solar cell was only produced in 1883 by Charles Fritts. The first cell was made of selenium coated by a very thin layer of gold and it had a very poor efficiency of around 1%. Photovoltaic cells were
