Benefits of Diversity Diversity in the workplace can be a huge benefit to companies by making the people working for the company as diverse as the customer base. Diversity brings new perspectives and ideas to companies that have traditionally been run by a homogeneous group of white men. With proper managemen,t and enough time, diverse groups increase their efficiency over that of homogeneous groups. Some types of diversity increase productivity more than others do. When the diversity is related to the way in which employees think about specific work-related problems (“job- relatedness”), it leads to an increase in productivity. Diversity in age, functional background, and education are a few types of diversity that increase group cohesiveness. Proper management is still important in all these situations. A good leader can influence the way a group interacts with a minority member by being sure that the group listens to and respects the minority opinion, even in cases where it does not sway the overall group opinion. The leader also needs to create an environment of openness and a willingness to learn in order to make it possible, and more likely, that the group accepts new ideas.
