Unformatted text preview: 1 What are the two main functions of an Operating System? OS is an extended machine – Hides the messy details which must be performed – Presents user with a virtual machine, easier to use OS is a resource manager – Each program gets time with the resource – Each program gets space on the resource 2 What are the main differences between Operating Systems for Mainframe computer and Personal computer?- OS for mainframe computer is batch processing operating system.- The basic difference is that with mainframe platform you can run more than one os at a time on same machine but this feature not available at pc os.- Mainframe os are targeted to handle hundreds of users at a time whereas PC os is targeted for a single user.- Generally os for batch systems have simply requirements than for pc .An os for a pc must be concern with response time for an interaction user. Batch system do not have such requirements.- A pure batch system may have not to handle time sharing where os for pc must switch between different jobs. An os for pc has many I/O devices. 3 List and describe briefly basic registers in CPU.
