Answers to Midterm 1 Review Questions 1. Pre-Vedic India was an advanced society with writing, but without a means to translate it, not much is know about the society from its writings. What is known about the religion at this time is from relics left behind, such as female figures that were taken to be fertility figures. There were also figure that appeared to be similar to later Venus figures, meaning that they represented a mother goddess. The male figures found appeared to be similar to the later figure of Shiva or of bulls. The Vedic tradition focused on a large collection of deities and many rituals honoring them or for specific life goals. The Vedas were a collection of mantras to the gods. The overall goal was to honor the gods enough to gain immortality and live among you favorite gods during your current life. At its earlier conception, the Vedas do not contain the idea of an afterlife. Brahmanism is closely related the to caste system in India. The Brahmins were the priests and the highest caste. Below them were the kings, Ksatriyas, followed by the cattle-rearers or cultivators and finally the slaves or servants. The caste system was rigid, and you were born into your caste. This was reinforced by the idea of karma and rebirth. Every action you take in your life accumulates karma, good or bad, and when you die, your karma decides how you will be reborn. This solidified the caste system because it gave a reason for a person to be in whatever situation they were born into. If you were not a good person in your past life, then you deserved to be born into a low caste, but it also meant that if someone in a higher caste is not a good person in this life, then they will ultimately pay the price for it, so there’s no need to damage your karma by attempting to punish them in this life.
