1 UPK / MECH ME4211 Development of Green Products What is Carbon Footprint? Carbon Dioxide CO2 and other gasses which result from the burning of fossil fuels accumulate in the atmosphere which in turn increases the earth’s average temperature in kilograms (kg). Carbon footprint acts as a proxy for the larger impact factor referred to as Global Warming Potential (GWP). Global Warming is responsible for the loss of glaciers, extinction of species, more extreme weather, and other environmental problems.

Carbon footprint is the sum of all emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), which were induced by activities in a given time frame. Amount of CO2 emitted by most common fuels: Each of the following activities add 1kg of CO2: Operating a computer for 32 hours (60 Watt consumption assumed) Production of 5 plastic bags Production of 2 plastic bottles Production of 1/3 of an American cheeseburger World wide energy sources (TW)
