Examples showing problems with their solutions (involving product develpoment Animal welfare is high on the agenda of some environmentalists and this, again, is already providing a stimulus for product development . One example is some work carried out at the Royal College of Art in London that resulted in the marketing of two products aimed at improving the welfare of pigs . The first was a new design of pig feeder that prevents pigs from seeing each other while eating, so discouraging aggression; the second was an alternative to the traditional farrowing crate for sows which allows the sow to behave naturally while protecting the piglets from accidental damage . Innovative design has also been used to reduce the quantity of pesticides used on farms . One example is the Bug-Vac , a device developed in California that works like a vacuum cleaner , sucking pests off crops such as strawberries and thus avoiding the need for pesticides. It is being sold in Europe as well as the United States. 1
