Germany - kind of political system germany has today - why its important for us - why it has this kind of political system - how it functions - Identities in post war germany - positive aspects of germany’s defeat in WWII o more democratic orientation o more liberal o faith in democracy among elit and masses o less militaristic - germans have complex identities o some see themselves as Europeans, some see themselves as german - international ppl o gues workers o 10% of population - absorption of east germany has created challenges - germany has become a protestant country - more positive features are more evident than ever in german society - since 1980s, collapse of communism o has renewed confidence in democratic aspirations o ppl see benefits in liberal democracy as opposed to communism - importance of rural law - importance of representative institutions - importance of federalised government - all become part of political text, features of german democracy - these things have recent origins - two largest parties in post war germany were the Christian democrats and the socialists - Christian Democrates o Western European phenomenon o More lasting features in german democracy today - Socialists o SPD
