FC put his name first before the title Capra was the first director to demand that his name be placed above the film’s title, shifting power away from producers and into the hands of directors. o Name caused a sea change, shift of powers from producers to directors John Ford The most popular director of westerns, helped to shape the form & style of the American western genre. o Came a lot of narrative conventions that evolved into clichés o Western is considered the most popular genre from late 20s to 60 and 70s o Started the scenes of riding into sunset etc His career spanned several decades w/ westerns like Stagecoach (1939) and The Searchers (1956) , as well as dramas like The Grapes of Wrath (1940) Orson Welles Welles, a young maverick of the radio, was given an unprecedented contract by RKO Pictures in 1940 which gave him complete artistic control over his first feature films o RKO gave him complete artistic control and huge pay for the film o Radio: World of Welle?
