S characters… society around them has placed them in a certain path Films like Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1975) and Raging Bull (1980) use gritty aesthetics to emphasize the harsh reality of modern urban life o Shows how urban life affects them and how life is in urban areas NATIONAL CINEMAS Although American & European industries have held prominent positions w/in global cinema since the silent era, many other national cinemas have changed or affected the art of filmmaking
