Television has become a huge integral part of homes in the modern world, and it is ex- tremely hard to imagine life without television. It provides entertainment to people of all ages es- pecially children and teenagers. This generation loves to watch TV and prefers to stay “glued” to the TV screen all day, rather than playing outside. In the United States of America, 47% of chil- dren ages two to eighteen years have a television set in their bedrooms. “On a typical day, they spend on average of 5.5 hours using media, including television, computer games and the Inter- net” (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2001). TV is the number one after-school activity for 6 to 17 year olds. Although television is loved by the youth and is a part of their daily lives, it has influ- enced them in many negative ways. As I was flipping through TV channels in May, 2009, I stopped on previews about a new MTV reality show called 16 and pregnant, airing on June 11, 2009. “Great another misleading reality show,” I thought to myself. The following month I watched one of the episodes and came to conclusion that it was actually a very good influence on teenagers. It follows the stories of pregnant teenage girls in high school dealing with the hardships of teenage pregnancy. Each epis- ode features a different teenage girl, with the episode typically beginning when she is four to eight months into her pregnancy. The episode typically ends when the baby is a few months old. The series is produced in a documentary format, with an animation of an elaborate cartoon depic- tion on notebook paper of highlights during each episode preceding the commercial breaks....
