Notes 3 07/13/2011 Development of Relationships 7 phases: 1. Inclusion: an invitation to relate (smiling, ‘hi’, eye contact). Inclusion continues in a relationship on a day-to-day basis (morning kiss, ‘how’s your day?’) 2. Response: smiling back, meeting eye contact, engaging in a conversation. This continues in a relationship – listening, active/being genuinely interested in their activities 3. Caring: expressing genuine concern for another’s welfare. Desire to please and contribute to their happiness. Pay attention to details 4. Trust: contributes to belief that each partner will act consistently in ways that promote the relationship’s growth. Honesty = builds expectations that you can either meet or not 5. Affection: feelings of warmth and attachment, characterized by holding hands, caressing, tender looks. Some of these expressions can be used for mate guarding (also known as tie-signs). 6.
