Anthro200 00:42 Family, marriage, kinship Traditional Marriage Functions 1. Legal parentages – legal parents for children  2. Sexual monopoly – all parties to the marriage have rights to the sexual pairs (can can  cheat) 3. Confures labor rights – women cant work for another family, men cant raise  someones fields (men can do what he wants) 4. Property right – property of the marriage, brought to and made during the marriage  ex. House, herd, money (men do what they want) 5. Joint fund – serves to raise and nurture the children, even when they move out 6. Relationships of affinity – in laws, linking familys Types  Monogamy - commit to one person at a time Serial monogamy – commit to one person at a time but once that relationship ends you  find a new person Polygamy – many partners Polyandry - one wife and more then one husband Happens mostly with brothers, or where there are not many women
