Community Ecology Community : A group of populations of different species living close enough to interact Interspecific interactions : A relationship between individuals of two or more species in a community; include competition, predation, herbivory, and symbiosis. o + and – to indicate how each Interspecific interaction affects the survival and reproduction of the two species engaged in interaction o Predation is a + / – interaction, with a positive effect on the survival and reproduction of the predator population and a negative effect on the prey o Mutualism is a + / + interaction because survival and reproduction of each species is increased in the presence of the other o A 0 indicates that a population is not affected by the interaction Interspecific competition : Competition for resources that are in short supply o a – / – interaction that occurs when individuals of different species compete for a resource that limits their growth and survival Competitive exclusion
