Sabrina Baez Sociology 316 9/1/2010 Out of Class Assignment #1 Anne Fausto – Sterling: The Five Sexes and The Five Sexes Revisited 1. Suzanne Kessler’s critique of Anne Fausto - Sterling’s “The Five Sexes” written in 1993, brings to surface that although “The Five Sexes” sheds light on some of the issues regarding intersexual people, it also emphasizes the value of genitalia too much. According to Kessler genitalia shouldn’t be the main issue, although important, matters such as the way society views gender, and the way these intersexual people perform according to gender are valid issues as well. Anne Sterling recognizes these concerns in her 2000 article. She also mentions that the popularity and recognition of intersexual people has grown significantly since 1993 when most intersexual groups were regarded as “zealots” and treated as such. In her 200 article she talks about how now physicians are eager to hear from such people and groups.
