Mynda Songer 7-19-07 Hist 207 Vietnam vs. Iraq The Vietnam War and the war in Iraq have many similarities. The government’s actions were similar in both wars, and there was a lack of success that was unforeseen by either administration. Public opinion was also extremely low in both wars, but the result of that negative public opinion was different. When considering sending troops into Vietnam, Johnson was worried that he would become “the president who saw Southeast Asia go the way China went.” This political concern outweighed his worry that once a war began, there would be no exit strategy. Although there are no quotes like these from the current administration, it seems clear to the public that the oil interests were the real reason for the invasion, and it also seems clear that there was no plan for an exit from the country. The attack on an American spy ship by North Vietnamese corresponds to the weapons of mass destruction that were supposed to be in Iraq. The attacks on the ship were never confirmed, and we now have proof that
