Book Review 1. Title of book: A Child Called “It” by David Pelzer. Published in 1995. 2. I chose this book because it was recommended by several people in class as we were discussing the list of books for this assignment. I was very interested because I have always heard about the impact of the story but have not read the memoir myself. 3. A Child Called “It” is the first book in a series of the author’s experience as a child. Starting when Pelzer was about 4 years old, his alcoholic mother began beating and torturing him. He is made to be the family slave, given only scraps of food if he is lucky, or is denied food for days at a time. His mother plays these “games” with David on a daily basis, leaving him fighting for his life. For David, this way of life is all he knows, and the memory of his once happy family is only a daydream to escape the horror of his reality. David soon learns to play his mother’s games, for it is the only way of survival. For example, when his mother was trying to force him to put his arm over the stove, he protested because he felt that a beating was not as bad at getting burned. For a young child, David was quite good at thinking on his feet to try to outsmart his mother and try to survive. Outside of the home, life wasn’t that different for David.
