Physics 172 – Recitation 05 Fall 2011 As you work on today’s problems remember that every time you use a fundamental principle you must explain clearly what physical system you are applying the principle to and which objects in the system’s surroundings are interacting significantly with the system. Problem 1. The figure below shows the view looking straight down on the ice surface of a hockey rink. A short rod is stuck in the ice at point O. A hockey puck is attached to it by a string so that hockey players can practice their shots without having to chase the puck. When they hit the puck at location A , the idea is that it will move along the circular path shown and come back to them. a) Transfer a sketch of this figure to your white board and draw arrows representing the momentum of the puck when it is at locations A and B. b) What objects in the puck’s surroundings are interacting significantly with it? In what direction does the force exerted on the puck by each of those objects point? Explain
