Running head: LITERACY ASSESSMENT MATRIX Types of Literacy Assessments Matrix Grand Canyon University Dr. Yoder April 2020 Formal Assessment Rationale Avoiding Misuse Standardized Tests Standardized tests are an effective way of evaluating students objectively. Its purpose is to assess the knowledge of the students utilizing specific questions regarding the content area (Mehrens & Kaminski, 1989). They are an excellent option to measure the growth of students and compare it with the state and national ranges to know how to implement other education strategies that are effective for the diverse needs of the students. To avoid the inappropriate use of standardized tests, four factors must be taken into account. They must be applied: so that parents can compare the student's knowledge with national standards. Hence, the teacher is aware of the educational level of the students, to identify students who need to be part of a special program, and to identify which educational complex needs more resources such as new tutoring programs, or more instructional staff (Popham, 2001). Journal Entries The main objective of this assessment is to create a reflection on the content area. Students can analyze the topic and reflect on their understanding or complications regarding the matter or lesson. The purpose of this assessment is to encourage the Journal entries should be used every week to document and evaluate student progress. To avoid misuse of this assessment, it is imperative to provide a detailed explanation of what you are looking for: honest comments regarding your learning. Students
