CH 301 50970 Exam 3 Study Sheet Dr. Quy MWF 2:00 – 3:00 pm Chapter 14 Covalent Bonding: Orbitals (14.2 – 14.6 Molecular Orbital Model) Chapter 5 Gases Molecular Orbital Model Atomic orbitals describe the arrangement of electrons in atoms. The MO model postulates molecular orbitals which describe the arrangement of electrons in molecules. For a bond between two atoms, there is a number of molecular orbitals equal to the original number of atomic orbitals. Electrons fit into the orbitals according to the same rules as atomic orbitals using Aufbau, Pauli Exclusion Principle, and Hund’s rule. Be able to describe a molecular orbital. Know how to define and recognize a sigma bond and a pi bond. Know the difference between a bonding orbital and an antibonding orbital. Know how they affect the energy and stability from the molecule. Know what a non-bonding orbital is (unshared pairs). Use MO theory to predict bond order for two atoms engaged in a covalent bond. Use MO theory to estimate which bond is stronger and/or shorter. Know the difference
