CHAPTER 1 BOOK NOTES Psychological Science- study of mind, brain, and behavior Scientific Method- the use of objective, systematic procedures that lead to an accurate understanding of what is being studied Nature- biologically innate Nurture- education, experience, and culture o So enmeshed they can’t be separated o Ex: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder Mind/Body problem Separate or not? Dualism- mind and body are separate yet intertwined o Renee Descartes Monist- the mind is what the brain does Neurotransmitters- chemicals that communicate messages between nerve cells Human genome- the basic genetic code Neuroscience- the way the brain influences behavior has been studied o Consistent patterns of brain activation suggest the two are connected o Localization- designated parts of brain for certain feelings, thoughts, and actions Evolutionary Theory- the brain has evolved over millions of years to solve problems related to survival and reproduction
