PANEL INTERVIEW 2 Panel Interview Q: How do you establish and maintain a good student-teacher relationship? A: Establishing and maintaining a good student-teacher relationship with each of your students is crucial with every student, but could be even more crucial with other students; students who are otherwise tougher to get through to or struggling academically. I believe by forming a trusting and open commutative relationship with my students opens many doors for each of them and me. It also makes the learning environment more open and enables each of the students to not be afraid to at the least attempt to be their best and participate within the classroom. If I have obtained some form of a connection with each of my students, I will avoid numerous outbursts and disruptive behaviors. Not to mention it also will help students who are more prone to be disengaged be more engaging in the classroom. I know that I will not avoid those instances completely, but the percentage will be greatly reduced because of my relationships with the students. Having positive and trusting relationships with my students allows each student the opportunity to have a confidant, friend, and teacher all in one. Q: What is your opinion: Do students come in to class with a desire to learn or is it the teacher’s job to foster a desire to learn? A: Let’s be realistic not every student wakes up in the morning and wants to go to school to learn. There could be many reason behind these type of situations, but a teacher cannot expect have the desire for learning already implemented in each of his or her student’s. For some student’s the teacher muster foster the desire, and in those situations, the teacher must foster that desire. My opinion lies in the middle; for some student’s the teacher does not need to foster the desire but for others a teacher does need to foster the desire. Those students who do not come to school with the desire to learn are often disengaged from any participation or working during seatwork time; providing an effective environment could be key. “However, opportunities for success, flexibility, and respect generally are present when teachers challenge their students at appropriate levels, provide academic support, use instructional techniques that convey excitement for the content, and make learning relevant” Encouraging the disengaged students will go a long way too and sometimes that is all that is takes for disengaged students; a little encouragement.
