Carter Whittington Jordan Radke Soci 415 16 September 2011 Reading Notes 9/16 In Chapter 5 Berliner basically discusses the assignment method and why it is consistent with the idea of The Good Society as well as how most modern economies don’t understand it. Later he talks about a Prisoner-of-War camp to address the meaning of efficiency in a society that values consumer goods. His conclusion is essentially that in order for a society to be efficient you can either give everyone the same amount of everything or distribute goods that suit a particular person’s needs and interests. Either way, at least in the example, an efficient system will result. Lastly, he discusses the Pareto Criterion, which says that when distributing goods one has to compare every other method of distributing those same goods and see if another way would yield at least one more winner and no more losers. In Chapter 6 Berliner discusses distributing goods via the price method. He first gives a background on what it is and points out that most societies use it. Then he describes three
