Carter Whittington Palis Geog 120 16 April 2009 Response Essay #4- The Global Path of a Commodity/Idea As soccer continues to dominate the world in popularity and struggle in the United States, a few questions come to mind. Where did soccer originate? Why is it more popular everywhere else in the world than the United States and finally, what path did the sport take from its origin to its current state of fame? In order to answer these questions we must first travel all the way back to China in the 2 nd and 3 rd centuries BC. It is hard to pinpoint the exact origin of the sport because of the many forms it has taken on over time, but according to FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), the "very earliest form of the game for which there is scientific evidence was an exercise of precisely this skilful technique dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC in China (the game of cuju).” This early form of soccer was rivaled by that of Medieval Europe, which played it in a variety of ways differing based on the time
