Caitlin Vodopia 9/20/2010 Capturing the Real Value of Innovation Tools New and innovative tools can cause increases in performance, reduced costs, and continue further innovation. New and innovative tools can also be a barrier and do just the opposite if the people, processes, and organizations involved in using them do not do so effectively. Industries that especially benefit from new innovative tools are the pharmaceutical, aerospace, semiconductor, and automotive industries. Research of the auto industry in the mid-1980s revealed five reasons as to why the Japanese were more efficient at bringing new product concepts to market: o Effectively leveraging supplier capabilities and simplifying project coordination o Applying manufacturing expertise to routine development activities such as prototyping o Increased overlapping of upstream and downstream activities o Less long-term participants involved on the project leading to wider assignments for individual engineers o Employing heavyweight project management
