Sacred Tree. The only other animal whichwe saw in any number was a small fox: I suppose this animal preyson the mice and other small rodents which, as long as there is theleast vegetation, subsist in considerable numbers in very desertplaces. Many kinds of fineevergreen trees, and plants with a tropical character, here takethe place of the gloomy beech of the southern shores. To obtain theacacia-leaves they crawl up the low stunted trees; and it is notuncommon to see a pair quietly browsing, whilst seated on a branchseveral feet above the ground. The varieties of manseem to act on each other in the same way as different species ofanimals--the stronger always extirpating the weaker. At last, seeingthe balls cut and strike the trees, they ran away, and we were leftin peace and quietness. We slept at the house of my guide atCanelones.
