This fact appears to mehighly remarkable; for the explanation generally given bygeologists, of the absence in any district of stratifiedfossiliferous deposits of a given period, namely, that the surfacethen existed as dry land, is not here applicable; for we know fromthe shells strewed on the surface and embedded in loose sand ormould, that the land for thousands of miles along both coasts haslately been submerged. This happened close toa cross, the record of a former murder. The line of the Andes is not, inthis neighbourhood, nearly so elevated as in Chile; neither does itappear to form so perfect a barrier between the regions of theearth. A niata bull with a common cow, orthe reverse cross, produces offspring having an intermediatecharacter, but with the niata characters strongly displayed:according to Se¤or Muniz, there is the clearest evidence, contraryto the common belief of agriculturists in analogous cases, that theniata cow when crossed with a common bull transmits herpeculiarities more strongly than the niata bull when crossed with acommon cow.
