Autonomic nervous system This note is about the role of the autonomic nervous and endocrine system in the bodies homeostasis The autonomic and neuroendocrine systems Autonomic nervous system (ANS) Part of the efferent subdivision of the CNS: o With endocrine system, controls internal environment of the body (maintains homeostasis) o o Unconscious behaviours’ o o PNS: Craniosacral (CNIII, VII, IX, X & S2-4); Neurotransmitter is ACh only Therapeutic target: o Drugs targeting the ANS: Adrenergics – alpha- & beta-blockers; Cholinergics; Anticholinergics; Uptake inhibitors – NRIs; Breakdown inhibitors – MAOs o Sympatholytics – blood pressure o Sympathomimetics – asthma o Parasympatholytics – motion sickness o Also to treat: arrhythmias, depression, anxiety, insomnia, bowel & bladder dysfunction,
