Blood – Function, composition, components. Blood specialised fluid that is responsible for delivery of nutrients and oxygen, and removal of waste products, to and from cells. Function There are 3 main functions of Blood in the body: 1. Transport o Blood cells (O 2 , CO 2 ), metabolites, products of digestion, waste products o Hormones, electrolytes, plasma proteins 2. Haemostasis Maintenance of blood volume is crucial Can prevent/limit its own loss 3. Immune defence Innate and acquired immunity Composition Composition of Blood Blood is a colloid that is 3X the viscosity of water. It represents 8.5%-9% of total body mass and can be split into two distinct portions o Fluid (plasma) o Cellular (red, white and platelets)
