Cerebral palsy Causes Prenatally, CP can be caused by cerebral malformations due to disturbances in brain development, intrauterine vascular accidents (interrupted placental blood flow), trauma, infection or hypoxia. Prematurity, low birth weight, prolonged labour, traumatic delivery, asphyxia and intra-uterine growth retardation are all important factors in spastic Cerebral Palsy. Complications of jaundice in neonates may also cause Cerebral Palsy, although this has diminished as a cause due to improvements in neonatal care. Epidemiology In the UK the incidence of Cerebral Palsy is about 2 per 1000 live births. The incidence is marginally higher in boys than girls (1.33:1). The incidence of comorbidities in children with cerebral palsy is as follows:- Learning difficulties – 31% Active seizures – 21%

Unformatted text preview: Blindness - 11% Prognosis The degree of disability will determine the seriousness of the prognosis. Many children with less severe forms of Cerebral Palsy lead normal lives. Remedial physiotherapy is helpful for children with Cerebral Palsy. Speech disorders are common, as are behavioural and emotional problems, mainly due to frustration. Contractures of the limbs may require surgery to improve mobility and prevent osteoarthritis. Prevention Increases in prenatal testing can help diagnose congenital disorders which can cause Cerebral Palsy. Improvements in obstetric care have reduced the incidence of Cerebral Palsy caused by trauma and hypoxia. Early treatment of haemolytic diseases in newborns has also helped reduce the incidence of Cerebral Palsy caused by this form of anaemia....
