Glaucoma Treatment Treatment of Open Angle Glaucoma is aimed at reducing intra-ocular pressure in the following ways:- By suppressing production of aqueous humour with:- o Topically applied Beta-blockers such as Timolol, Levobunolol and Betaxolol o Topical Alpha 2 adregeneric agonists such as Brimonidine and Apraclonidine o Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors such as Acetazolamide By increasing outflow of aqueous humour with:- o Topical Alpha 2 adrenergic agonists (above) o Mitotic agents such as Pilocarpine and Ecothiopate o Prostaglandin analogues such as Latanoprost and Travoprost Surgical treatments include laser iridotomy and surgical peripheral iridotomy for chronic glaucoma. Laser trabeculoplasty removes a small segment of the trabecular mesh to improve aqueous outflow. Angle-closure glaucoma treatment: Acute angle-closure attack is a medical emergency. Blindness will occur in a few days if it is not treated. Drops, pills, and medicine given through a vein (by IV) are used to lower pressure. Some people also

The new channel relieves pressure and prevents another attack. Prognosis Without treatment Open Angle Glaucoma may progress to complete blindness. If anti-glaucoma eye drops are used, and the eye has not suffered extensive damage the prognosis is very good. When the condition is detected early, medical management is most successful. It is imperative that patients receiving steroid therapy, both topically and systemically, undergo regular tonometry and opthalmoscopy particularly if there is a family history of glaucoma. Prevention Regular eye tests, especially in those with a family history of Glaucoma are essential to ensure early detection and treatment of the condition. «...back...
