Motor system: basal ganglia and cerebellum Integrating pathways o Somatosensory inputs o Visual inputs o Proprioceptive inputs Integrated in post. parietal cortex (area 5, 7) which receive extensive inputs from sensory cortex Principal descending motor tracts from cortex (corticobulbar & corticospinal) arise from 3 contiguous areas o Primary Motor Area (M1; Brodmann’s area 4) in pre-central gyrus o Pre-Motor Area (PMA; Brodmann’s area 6) in frontal lobe, anterior to M1 o Supplementary Motor Area (SMA; M2) on medial surface of frontal lobe Voluntary movements primarily executed by motor cortex (M1) Neurones in PMA & SMA (+ parietal & frontal association areas) active before motor activity begins o Involved in generating motor plan where sensory information from somatic sensory cortex
