Ovarian cancer Treatment Management is based on the tumour stage (I to IV) or the grade of the tumour Stage IA, IB, or grade 1 or 2 surgical staging of the tumour (=removal of ovarian tumour) plus omentectomy, lymph node dissection Stage IC to II or grade 3 Add chemotherapy - paclitaxel and carboplatin plus surgical staging (as above) Stage III or stage IV (both advanced) Add intraperitoneal chemotherapy plus others listed above RMI (Risk of Malignancy lndex:) Incorporating CA 125, ultrasound and menopausal status for the accurate preoperative diagnosis of ovarian cancer. U x M x CA125 (U/S x menopausal state)

Unformatted text preview: U = ultrasound findings (1pt for each): cysts, sold areas, ascites, bilateral lesions M = menopausal state: 1 pt for pre-menopausal; 4 pt for post-menopausal RMI>200 would warrant a referral Example: 59 year old women. There were 2 findings on ultrasound and she is post menopausal. Her CA125 = 36 units/mL RMI = U x M x CA125 =2 x 4 x 36 = 288 which >200, therefore refer to spet Prevention As the exact cause of ovarian cancer is difficult to identify, prevention is often difficult. Instead catching it early will lead to a better prognosis....
