Sudden infant death syndrome Common Myths about SIDS There have been a number of theories regarding the cause and prevention of SIDS. Some received widespread publicity but none have been scientifically proven, they include:- Mattresses o In the early 90s, one scientist suggested that fire-retardant mattresses generate toxic gases which cause SIDS. Despite significant research around the world into this theory no corroborative evidence has been found Flying o One study published in 1998 exposed babies to 15% oxygen, as found in aircraft. While some babies reacted more dramatically than others, it was not shown that taking babies on long-haul flights increased the risk of SIDS Monitors o In the USA in the 70s, it was suggested that babies who suffered from apnoea were at a higher risk of SIDS, and that through monitoring their breathing SIDS could be prevented.

A booklet from the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID), helps to explain what happens after an infant dies and the feelings and emotions that families can experience. Talking about what happened and going over the details can be of great help. Many people turn to relatives and friends, while others talk with their GP, health visitors and midwives. The Care of the Next Infant (CONI) Scheme, run by the FSID in conjunction with the NHS in over 85% of the country, offers advice, support and practical help to bereaved parents anxious about having another child....
