Italian 230 9/13 - There was a lot of optimism for Italy’s unification, this has changed quickly though - storytelling about your nation with symbols - strong connotation with statues - tre corone (three crowns): Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarca - questioned the language, what should people write with? Italian? Latin? - Manzioni: “I promessi sposi”, da Milano, thinks the national language should be Florentine but a lot of people don’t like this - La anal Fabetismo, 75% could not read/write in 1861 - by 1941, 40% were illiterate - The children were very useful for helping out and their families didn’t want to send them to school - Neretto (narrow and bold font) and illustrazioni were taken from US newspapers
