The title suggests this poem is about someone's view to the world. I learned that the person in this poem lost the right or ability to talk. Identify and explain poetic devices in the poem. Repetition: The author starts each stanza by using the phrase "I look". Parallelism: The first three lines in the first two stanzas are parallel. Repetition: "talk" "like you" "ways". Metaphor: Rita used "the scrambled ballad" to describe the conflict between her own langrage with English/French. Simile: I speak like you How are the words arranged? What is the effect on the reader? This is a free verse poem, there's no pattern. It gives the readers more room for their own imagination and it's easier for the readers to connect themselves with the poem. This poem is a ballad, it is based on Rita's own life experiences. It educates and makes connections with the reader about the truth and the situation.
