10/13/10 Freud and the Structure of Personality o Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) Was his mothers favorite Earned a medical degree Father died… became depressed and anxious Started to analyze the content of his own experience Contributed more than psychoanalyses, but described the structure and development of personality o Structure of Personality Psychic determinism There is a cause for every behavior and that cause can become known There is an underlying reason for everything a person does, thinks, and feels Conscious level Thought of which we are aware of at any given moment o Includes thoughts, feelings, and perceptions o What you are currently thinking about o Represent only a small fraction of information available to you Preconscious level Contains the mental contents of which we could easily become aware of if we attended to them Unconscious level (represents the largest part of the mind) Parts of the mind which we are unaware of and cant become aware except under specific circumstances o They are anxiety provoking o Traumatic or socially unacceptable thoughts
