2/23/11 Significance Any observed differences are due to some systematic influence rather than chance Adolescents, video games and aggression o Measure aggressive behaviors following violent video games or non violent video games o If we notice differences in aggressive behaviors and we can be assured that our two groups of participants do not differ on other variables then we can say that video games systematically influence aggression levels o Things do happen by chance but they are improbable so we can rule out chance as a cause to a certain probability level Leaving room for Chance We never state things with absolute certainty- always in probabilistic terms We leave open a small possibility that observed differences are due to chance This is our significance level- usually .05 (threshold) We have a 5% probability that our observed differences are due to chance o This is our level of risk we take in saying there are systematic differences, when really those differences are due to chance.
