2/28/11 Independent Samples t-tests o Also called t-tests between two groups and Student’s t-test o Developed in the Guinness brewery in 1908 by Samuel Gosset o Claude Guinness hired statisticians and biochemists from Oxford and Cambridge to improve his company’s production Guinness had the innovative idea of using stats rather than tribal knowledge to make the best beer o Gosset developed the test to measure differences between different beers o Had to publish it anonymously as “Student” because Guinness regarded the use of statistics as a trade secret History Continued o One of Gosset’s (Student) initial questions was which type of barley to use o Gosset’s main problem was that he could not use the z-test because he could not determine the population statistics Stats “purists” argued against using anything but the population statistics o He ignored the purists and pressed on using the sample standard deviation instead Utility of Student’s test o The independent samples t-test is used to determine if there is a difference
