4/13/11 Regression and Model Fitting Model Fitting o Psychological theories o Theories can be mathematical and that adds scientific rigor to our work o One of the best things to say to physicists who consider psychology a soft science o For example we could model memory decay by saying it is a function of time o Memory strength = initial storage – forgetting time Ebbinghaus’ Forgetting Curve o Model of memory retention o R=memory retention o t=time o s= initial strength of memory R=e^-(t/s) o Predict how well a memory will be remembered given time and strength o Predict Y from X value through linear regression The Point of Model Fitting o Determine the best set of parameters to fit our data o Best explanation for our data is the one that minimize error o In regression we are tasked with finding the parameters (slope and y intercept) parameters that minimize MSE. o These are the beta coefficients The Least Squared Method o
