Conformity The tendency to change our perceptions, opinions, and/or behaviors so that they match those of people around us. o Majority or minority o Groups or individuals o Ex: Don’t talk during the movie, Face front in an elevator Public conformity o Conform to other people just to get along with them Private conformity o Accept a certain behavior because it lines up with others o Nonconscious Autokinetic effect o A tendency to see a light moving in a completely dark room Sherif o Rate how much the light moved in by themselves o Then in a group Their answers converge Why conform? o Informational social influence Unfamiliar situations Ex: international travel, how do I act?
