Enteral Nutrition Part 2 HUN4445 Selecting Tube Feeding Formulas Patient issues Medical condition Nutrient needs Gastric emptying Digestive and absorptive capacity Metabolic abnormalities Formula issues Physical properties: Caloric Density o Range: 1.0 - 2.0 kcal/ml o Typical patient : 1.0 kcal/ml Higher caloric density formulas o volume or fluid-restricted o high energy needs Ingredients/Nutrient content Protein Range: 35 - 95 g/L o Intact digestive/absorptive function - whole proteins e.g. o Impaired digestive/absorptive function - hydrolyzed protein (pre-digested) e.g. Carbohydrate Range of 28-70% kcals of available charbohydrate Some contain fiber Sources: Fat Range: 3 55% of kcals LCT or LCT and MCT Only MCT affect osmolality LCT needed for EFA adults need ~2-5% of total kcals from EFA infants need ~1- 4% Vitamins and Minerals Most formulas provide RDA if enough kcals given Supplements for additional needs Specialty formulas may differ (renal formulas; wound healing)
