Special Problems for ME 200 – Fall 2011 Special Problems 26, 27, and 28 Due Friday, November 4, 2011 SP26: A lead casting of 18 kg mass at 200 C is quenched in a 0.03 m 3 insulated tank containing water at 25 C and 1 bar. (a) Calculate the change in entropy (kJ/K) for lead casting. (b) What is the change in entropy (kJ/K) for water? SP27: An unknown ideal gas has molar mass of 8.314 kg/kmol. At absolute temperature T 1 , the values of specific internal energy and specific enthalpy are 3000 kJ/kg and 5000 kJ/kg, respectively. At absolute temperature T 2 , the values of specific internal energy and specific enthalpy are 6000 kJ/kg and 10000 kJ/kg, respectively. The pressure of this ideal gas is 2 bar at T 1 and 6 bar at T 2 . Calculate the change in entropy (kJ/kg-K) for the ideal gas.

Unformatted text preview: SP28: Carbon monoxide in a piston-cylinder device is compressed from 1 bar and 37 C to 3 bar and 147 C. The compression process requires work input of 88 kJ/kg. The surrounding temperature is 27 C and the temperature of system boundary can be assumed to be average temperature of CO during the compression process. (a) Calculate entropy generation (kJ/kg-K) within the piston-cylinder device. (b) What is the total entropy generation (kJ/kg-K) during the process considering the piston-cylinder device and its surrounding? (c) Explain the difference between the entropy generation within the system and that for the system plus its surrounding....
