Special Problems for ME 200 – Fall 2011 Special Problems 35, 36, and 37 Due Friday, December 2, 2011 SP35: A thermal power plant operating on the reheat Rankine cycle produces a net power output of 80 MW. Steam enters the high-pressure turbine at 10 MPa and 500 C (state 1) and the low-pressure turbine at 1 MPa and 500 C (state 3). The isentropic efficiency of high- pressure and low-pressure turbine is 80%. Steam leaves the condenser as saturated liquid at 10 kPa (state 5) and is pumped back to boiler pressure of 10 MPa (state 6). The isentropic efficiency of the pump is 95%. (a) Determine the temperature ( C) of steam at the exit of high-pressure turbine (state 2) and low-pressure turbine (state 4). (b) Calculate the mass flow rate (kg/s) of steam. (c) Determine the thermal efficiency (%) of the cycle. (d) What is the rate of entropy generation (kW/K) for the high-pressure turbine? What is the rate of entropy generation (kW/K) for the low-pressure turbine? (e) Show the cycle on T-s diagram.
