According to the NASW competence in social work practice means social workers practice
within their areas of competence and develop and enhance their professional expertise. As social
worker we should continue to increase our knowledge for professional and personal
advancement.
One criteria that defines competence in social work is ethical practice. As social workers we
must conduct ourselves in an ethical manner, and to make ethically sound decisions. An example
of ethical practice is being a mandate reporter. Anything dealing with abuse, neglect, self-harm,
or harm of others is to be reported to the proper authorities no matter the persons background or
