B/W Darkroom Photography I   (PGY1401C)   Page 1            Light is the photographer's basic raw material.   Light is the  visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum,  ranging from  deep red to deep violet.  Beyond this visible spectrum are  wavelengths not seen by the human eye but are recordable on  specialized films, such as infrared, ultra- violet, and x-ray.  At the far  ends of the electromagnetic spectrum are radio waves with  frequencies measured in miles and high energy waves like gamma  measured in millionths of a millimeter.  Visible light is a very small  portion of the total spectrum. Blue             Green               Red I--------------|-----------------|-----------------I 400           500               600               700nm (nanometer =  millionth/mm) Page 2 The visible spectrum can be broken down into three broad bands of  color;  red green, and blue,  the  additive   primaries  of light.  Seen  together, in roughly equal amounts, we refer to it as  "white light" .   Each pair of additive primaries blended together creates  secondary  colors referred to as  subtractive primaries .  Blending  these colors together creates black. Additive primaries  must be blended together with separate  light sources to create new colors.  This process is most commonly  used in  TV/video projection and computer monitors .
