Chapter 33 Chemical Control of the Animal Body: The Endocrine System Vocabulary adrenal cortex – secretes three types of steroid hormones called glucocorticoids including cortisol, aldosterone, and testosterone. adrenal gland – two glands, adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex adrenal medulla – produces epinephrine and norepinephrine adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) – stimulate adrenal cortex to release hormones such as cortisol – released when body is under stress to help cope with short term stressors. Raises lood glucose levels and inhibits immune response aldosterone – regulates sodium content of blood amino acid based hormone - type of endocrine hormone made of single amino acids androgen – steroid hormones released from the testes anterior pituitary antidiuretic hormone (ADH) – released from posterior, promotes reabsorption of water from kidneys, constricts arteriols diabetes mellitus duct – tubes exocrine secreations are released through endocrine disrupter endocrine gland – ductless glands, release hormones within the body endocrine hormone – produced by specialized cells usually released due to stimuli, carried through the circulatory system endocrine system – consists of hormones and the cells that secrete and receive them epinephrine – prepares the body for emergency action, increase heart and respiratory rates,
