Novel Contribution The authors propose JPIP-W for the interactive transmission of JPEG2000 images over the web as an extension to the existing JPIP mechanism JPIP can not take full advantage of caching at intermediate proxy servers due to technical limitations JPIP-W splits the file into “blocks” that can be cached at proxy servers An overall gain in efficiency can hence be achieved

Progressive Compression Hence, Progressive Compression is employed It uses the first few packets to show low quality versions of images while more data arrives The image is re-rendered as more packets arrive into higher and higher quality

Technical obstacles JPIP employs GET parameters to send image parameters like height and width, which changes the URL for each request Proxies treat them as dynamic objects and do not cache them JPIP uses custom HTTP headers which proxies ignore JPIP standard requires the use of the “no-cache” option in server responses, which completely disables possibility of caching
